Excursions (Lake Geneva Region)
The animal world
The ideal destination for a relaxing family outing: watch the animals and take a trip in a boat on the romantic little lake.
Natural plants, white sand, foam, trees...you would be forgiven for thinking you were in a tropical forest, with the humid, hot air in this biotope. Thrill-seekers can even have their photograph taken with a snake around their neck!
Museums
The Elysée Museum, a magnificent late-18th century villa with terraced gardens offering a superb view of Lake Geneva and the French Alps, has been completely dedicated to photography since 1985.
The Hermitage Foundation is dedicated to temporary Fine Art exhibitions, and is located inside a beautiful 19th century residence surrounded by magnificent parkland that is open to the public.
The museum displays iconographical and applied art collections from the Association Mémoire de Lausanne, in addition to different cultural assets belonging to the Town of Lausanne.
A unique, lively and interactive exhibition, the Olympic Museum is the world's largest information centre relating to the Olympic Games.
Fun & Games
The Skate Park in the centre of Lausanne is a great meeting place for young people. This is where skating, roller blade and scooter enthusiasts come to have fun.
Factory
Vincent Calabrese, a self-taught philosopher, is one
of the last watchmakers in the artistic mechanical tradition. His
collection stands out due to its originality and individuality. This
visit should not be missed! Guided tours by appointment.
Driving a choo-choo
The 'Brouette' steam railway line takes you across fields to Echallens, a typical countryside market town, where you can visit the Maison du Blé et du Pain (a wheat and bread museum): enough to make your mouth water!
Kloster
Built in 1900 thanks to the specific bequest of Gabriel de Rumine, the palace includes a clutch of buildings: the University, the library and the Fine Arts and Science museums.
Dominating the town from the top of the hill, Lausanne cathedral is a Gothic building dating back to the first half of the 13th century, and displays architectural features borrowed from the Anglo-Norman and north-eastern French styles.
Built in 1270, this is the only old convent established since 1260 that has survived.
The monastery is surrounded by a wall with watchtowers (part of which remains). The Roman church with its added Gothic details lies over the site of two previous churches, whose foundations can just be seen on the ground. South of the church is the old cloister and the basement of a building that is said to have been Moines' house. The whole area was recently excavated and many remains of the old monasteries were found, in addition to the remains of a cruciform church.
Museums
the collection consists of Jean Dubuffet's donation. Unusual and foreign cultural pieces, created in psychiatric wards, prisons or hiding places are displayed. Wölfi, Aloïse, Lesage, Carlo and Hauser are just a few of the artists whose work is included in the collection.
The mudac has been open in its current form since 1967 and is the only museum for contemporary applied arts in the French part of Switzerland.
