Along the Roman trade route on Lake Zürich and in the Rhine Valley, Roman settlements sprung up. In the year 300 A.D. wine was grown on many of the south facing hillsides.
In the 5th century A.D. the Alemanni arrived. They were primarily beer drinkers and the vineyards along the hillsides lay fallow and were no longer used as vineyards.
In the past three decades, innovative vintners have revived the ancient tradition of winegrowing. Excellent, purposeful training and the merging of some vineyards as well as increased self-marketing have brought success to the region’s viticulture.
