It is not know whether wine was grown in the Valais before Julius Cesar defeated the Gauls in the 1st century B.C., since there is no documentary evidence. It is assumed that over two millennia ago a wild vine was discovered, the Vitis sylvestris, whose fruit resembles other berries of this region.
The Roman soldiers did not only bring war. The Romans brought oil, wine, pottery, metal and spices to the region. They introduced a new language and civilization as well as a new culture. With their arrival, the first grapevines appeared, which were cultivated along the banks of the Rhone River. Only in the 3rd century did viticulture spread readily in the Valais – thanks to Christianity. To celebrate the Mass and Communion, wine was necessary. Many vineyards owe their existence to the monks of the large monasteries, who cleared the soil, planted, harvested and produced wine.
