All of Ticino’s eight districts grow wine. The Ticinese vineyards benefit from region’s mild climate that is almost Mediterranean in character.
In the Canton of Ticino, vintners primarily grow red wine. No less than 98% of Ticino’s wine production is based on red grapes, and 88% of the red wine produced in Ticino is based on Merlot grapes, which originated in the Bordelais region. Other types of red wine are the Pinot Noir and the Nostrano, which is considered a typical Ticinese wine. Some varieties of grapes are used as table grapes or for the production of the famous Grappa.
