Like the vineyards in many other wine-growing regions, those in the Three-Lake-Country have experienced their ups and downs. The wine growing area reached the point at which the largest expanse of land was planted with vineyards in the middle of the 17th century, most likely due to the increased demand during the Thirty Years War.
Specifics about the development of vineyards became available only at the end of the 19th century. From these data it may be concluded that the wine-growing area extended over 1200 hectares in the year 1884. By the beginning of the 1970s it had been reduced to 560 hectares. Today, among the white grapes mainly Chasselas, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay and, as a representative of the blue grapes, Pinot Noir are cultivated on 605 hectares.
