St. Luc seems to hang on by a hair to the steep flanks of Mt. Bella Tola. Deep gorges separate the individual terraces of the Val d'Anniviers. Because the villages here are so remote -- they can only be reached via a winding mountain road -- they have managed to maintain their special culture. There are many hiking trails that fan out from the various villages all along the valley. One of the prettiest hikes is the mountain tour up the Bella Tola, 3025 m.a.sl., the peak looming between Turtmann Valley and Val d'Anniviers. The hike lasts three hours from the mountain station of the funicular that brings one up to St-Luc - Tignousa, 2169 m.a.s.l. This spectacularly panoramic hike high above the Val d'Anniviers can be done by anyone who is reasonably in shape. The path along to the mountain refuge Bela Tola and from there up to the top is well-marked and easy to hike on. It may be a bit more strenuous towards the top but it is well worth the effort: across the vally one can spy the Weisshorn, Gabelhorn, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche in all their glory.
How to get there:
Drive or take public transportation to St. Luc, from there take the funicular to Tignousa.
The careful planning of a hiking tour will ensure that you also derive the maximum pleasure and enjoyment from it. Please take the time to contact the local information centre and enquire about route and weather conditions before setting off. Your intended hiking trail may be fully or partially closed, depending on the time of year and weather conditions.
