The world's most beautiful mountain in view
Riffelalp
Select your Region:

Hiking with views of the world's most stunning mountain? Not a problem
in Zermatt. Whilst the Matterhorn naturally outshines all else, it
would be a little unfair to simply pass over the other natural beauty
spots in the valley. A shining example being the walk from the
Riffelmatt to the Grünsee, and further on to the Sunnegga. A
magnificent Swiss stone-pine forest borders the trail, crystal-clear
mountain lakes and wildly romantic moraine landscapes are passed. This
hike naturally offers numerous vantage points, yielding spectacularly
panoramic views of the Matterhorn.
Riffelalp - Grünsee - Grindjisee - Leisee - Sunnegga
From the Riffelalp, the route leads across the tracks of the Gornergrat Railway in an easterly direction. After crossing the Balmbrunnenbach (stream) the trail continues until the Bärghüs Grünsee is reached. From here, it is only a short distance to the Grünsee. The walk continues along the narrow pathway towards the Findel glacier. The Findelbach is crossed and the route continues along an imposing glacier moraine to the magnificently situated Grindjisee. At the point where the mountain stream leaves the lake, the trail towards Sunnegga starts. With the hamlet of Findeln in sight, the path branches off to the right towards the Leisee. From the Leisee, Sunnegga is reached via a short climb.
