The Grand St-Bernard pass has always been
a north-south passage for travellers and
goods. Centuries of historical events have
taken place on this pass, and the thousandyear
old hospice bears witness to this. From
the tiny refuge of old to the imposing building
which stands today, this symbol of welcome
and shelter has seen constant modernisation
over the years.
Originally founded by the current namesake
of the pass and the hospital, Bernard de
Menthon, it has given shelter to millions of
people, both famous and unknown, rich and
poor, soldiers and monks. Its role has
changed over time, with the modernisation
of access routes, but still today, the monks
continue their work here.
