In 1936 Fritz Müller from Frutigen and his son plucked up the courage to build the first aerial cable car for passengers in the Canton of Bern. It was a long and laborious struggle… The facility, which they built exclusively with their own finances, was inaugurated on September 12, 1937. From now on the 4-seater cabins brought tourists in summer and winter to the Engstligenalp. In 1967 the Engstligenalp Sk Lift company was compelled to replace the 12-seater cable car with 40-seater cabins. Today approximately 110,000 persons visit the Engstligenalp annually and enjoy the peace and quiet in the secluded mountain world. Thanks to its location at 2,000 meters, snow on the Engstligenalp is guaranteed. In summer the nature reserve attracts visitors to its two waterfalls and its wide, flat plateau, which is ideal for hiking and enjoying nature.
As soon as one approaches Unterbirg during the ascent, one can hear the roaring and rushing of the Engstligen Falls. At the top, a high plateau surrounds you. Embraced by mighty mountains such as the Wildstrubel, Stäghorn and Tschingellochtighorn, delicate Alpine meadows with fragrant flowers and herbs spread out. Countless brooks and runnels meander through the meadows.
