The world’s steepest funicular is a little below the Grimsel Pass near Handegg. The Gelmer train was built for the construction of the Gelmer dam and of the water feed line for the Handeck Power Station. It started operating in 1926 and in 2001 it became accessible to the public. It stretches 1028 meters in length, which the train overcomes in 10 minutes at a speed of 2 meters/second.
The thrill starts even before one enters the world’s steepest funicular: At Gelmerbahn’s the valley station you will find a new fixed-rope bridge, which spans the ravine 70 meters above the Handegg Falls.
The Gelmerbahn boasts a spectacular gradient of 106 percent. At the top, you are surrounded by the magnificent mountains embracing Lake Gelmer (1850m). It is an ideal place for relaxing, or for taking a walking or trekking tour in the Grimsel mountain world.
