In connection with the construction of the first electric power plant at the Reichenbach Falls, the Reichenbach train was built. It started operating in 1899 and facilitated the access to the uppermost waterfall and to the Reichbach Valley. The funicular to the Reichenbach Falls has been operated by electricity from the beginning. The train’s route is 714 meters and climbs 244 meters. It crosses the Reichenbach on a 77-meter bridge. The mountain station is situated at 844 meters above sea level.
The Reichenbach Falls have become internationally famous through Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes, the main character of the novel fell down the waterfall together with his archenemy, Professor Moriarty, in May 1891 after a fierce fight. But Sherlock Holmes survived. He used the opportunity to stage his own death. In doing so he later lured his shooter into a trap. A memorial plaque at the Reichenbach Falls reminds visitors of the fictitious incident.

The nostalgic funicular takes you to the imposing Reichenbach Falls. Three viewing terraces offer a breathtaking view of the 120-meter-high gushing waterfall.
Access:
By public transportation (Brünigbahn) from Lucerne or Interlaken to Meiringen; you can reach the Reichenbach Falls Train by local bus or by foot. By car from Interlaken, Brünig Pass, Grimsel or Susten to the valley station of the train.
