Capolago
The cogwheel train of Ferrovia Monte Generoso links the village of Capolago, located 274 meters above sea level on Lake Lugano, with the peak of the 1,704-meter Monte Generoso via a 40-minute ride through untouched nature. A lovely panoramic view over lakes and mountains awaits you here.
Monte Generoso is the most important viewing mountain in the Canton of Ticino. It can be comfortable reached with the cogwheel train from Capolago, located at 274 meters above sea level on Lake Lugano. After a forty-minute trainride through the untouched landscape, you will reach the 1,704-meter Kulm. From here a magnificent view extends over the lake region (the lakes of Lugano, Como, Verese and Langensee), the city of Lugano, the Po Valley with Milan and from the Apennines to the Alpine chain, from Gran Paradiso to Monte Rosa, from the Matterhorn to the Jungfrau and finally from the Gotthard Massif to the Bernina Group.

Throughout the year you will have several opportunities to experience the fascinating atmosphere of the "Belle époque": A nostalgic ride in the original panorama-cars, which are open on the sides. They are pushed by a steam engine from the year 1890 (the oldest locomotive of this kind still operating in Switzerland), or by a Diesel engine, to the peak.

On the Monte Generoso you will find countless leisure activities for every taste and inclination. From a simple hike along trails totaling 51 kilometers to cave explorations, from Mountainbike excursions along a 27-kilometer route to paragliding, from bird watching to astronomy – or finally the descent into the dreamy Valle di Muggio.
