Switzerland`s highest-altitude city (at 1000m above sea level) is the birthplace of world-acclaimed architect Le Corbusier. He left his mark with early works including the Maison Blanche, a house built by Le Corbusier for his parents in 1912; it opened to the public for the first time in autumn 2005. You`ll search La Chaux-de-Fonds for medieval buildings in vain: in 1794 the city was almost completely destroyed by fire. Charles-Henri Junod rebuilt La Chaux-de-Fonds on a regular grid pattern and today the city is regarded as the bastion of Art Nouveau in Switzerland.
