In the 16th to 18th centuries, Solothurn was the seat of the French ambassadors and Switzerland`s most beautiful Baroque city. The representatives of the French kings bequeathed an international flair that is still in evidence today. Architectural gems accompany visitors along every step of the way - the old city has 11 churches and chapels and as many fountains and towers. But life moves with the times within the ancient walls: Basel architects Herzog & de Meuron have designed a modern glass building for Helvetia Insurance within the old town.
