Geneva is Switzerland's most cosmopolitan city, home to the United Nations and the place where Henri Dunant founded the Red Cross in 1864. A building worthy of note is the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) by Rino Brodbeck and Jacques Roulet. Some 40 museums around the hill of the old town and the imposing St Peter's Cathedral foster a brisk exchange of ideas in the fields of art, architecture, science and philosophy. The MAMCO gallery displays treasures from the contemporary photographic and video scene, and the impressive Forces Motrices cultural centre appears to float in the middle of the Rhône.
