In 1976, the foundations of a Roman temple were discovered in the south-east of Martigny. The Fondation Gianadda was built around these - a museum presenting three or four major painting and sculpture exhibitions annually. The ruins of Martigny`s La Bâtiaz castle, with wonderful views over the Rhône Valley, are striking evidence of life in medieval Valais.
