Living history
Nyon occupies one of the most favourable positions on Lake Geneva – which is why the Romans founded their first colony on Helvetian soil here.
Nyon occupies one of the most favourable positions on Lake Geneva – which is why the Romans founded their first colony on Helvetian soil here.
The precious remains from Roman civilization
in the region are on display in the Roman
Museum, situated in the foundations of the
ancient basilica. Not far away stands an
impressive fortress, built in the 12th century
and altered in the 16th. This now houses the
History Museum, whose entertaining and
visitor-friendly displays include an important
collection of 18th-century porcelain from
the celebrated Nyon factory. The chateau is
superbly situated on a promontory overlooking
the lake – to which the nearby Lake
Geneva Museum is devoted, packed with
interesting facts and finds.
