Saint-Maurice, the cultural jewel of the Portes
du Soleil–Chablais region, lies midway between
the shores of Lake Geneva and the
high Alps. This charming small town boasts
an exceptionally rich cultural and historical
heritage: an abbey, castle, fortress, old town,
churches and chapels.
A tour of the abbey basilica and treasure, the excavations, catacombs and cloister, brings some 1,500 years of monastic tradition to life.
Since 1863 visitors have been marvelling at the “Fairy Grotto”; now members of the public can also explore the tunnels of the fortress – until recently, a top-secret military establishment. The proud silhouette of the castle and its fortifications can be seen from far off, guarding the entrance to the Rhone valley.
