Every Swiss mountain pass has its fascinating history. Celts, Romans, priests, pilgrims, mercenaries, merchants, and muleteers used over time and all left their imprints. The Splügen Pass is no exception: everyone used it and once the road through the Viamala was built, the pass became a place of pan-European importance. Indeed, until the Gotthard connection was built, the Splügen Pass and the St. Bernardino Pass were the most important connections between Northern and Southern Europe. Aftre that it lost some of its importance until it was rediscovered as one of the most beautiful and romantic hiking routes, passing through the Viamala, the Roffla Gorge, and the Cardinella Gorge. The 65-km-long long-distance hiking route connecting Thusis to Chiavenna offers many highlights and can be hiked in several days.
Viamala -Ferien offers hiking packages: Via Spluga with partial hikes (2 nights) or the entire route (5 nights) with luggage-forwarding service.
How to get there:

Historic long-distance footpath
The landscape on either side of the Splügen pass – between Thusis in Graubünden, and the small Italian town of Chiavenna – shows traces of its 2,000-year history as a transit route over the Alps. The beautiful viaSpluga, which links the two towns, passes through spectacular natural landscapes – not least the narrow Viamala gorge with its 300-metre walls, and the wild Cardinello gorge. It also takes in many nationally and internationally important cultural sites along the way, including the prehistoric rock carvings of Carschenna, the medieval painted ceiling of the church of St. Martin in Zillis, and the unspoilt villages of Andeer and Splügen. Ideally, allow four days to walk the whole route; special packages are available which include the onward transport of your luggage from one hotel to the next.
