The Schynige Platte railway, which opened in 1893, is one of Switzerland’s pioneering lines. The cog train climbs at a sedate 12 kph up to Schynige Platte, passing many panoramic viewpoints overlooking Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, where the great Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler painted some of his famous landscapes, more than 100 years ago.
After a 50-minute journey you arrive at the summit, 1,967 m above sea level, with stunning views of the world-famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, so close you feel you could touch them. One of Switzerland’s great nostalgic rides – not to be missed.
