The region around Nendaz has managed to
preserve its traditional heritage while also offering
guests all modern holiday facilities. The
area is full of fascinating reminders of a rich
past.
The bisses, for example, are the oldest works
of agricultural engineering in Switzerland.
These irrigation canals, dug into the ground
and rock or built of wooden boards, are
important witnesses of the long struggle to
provide reliable irrigation for cultivated areas.
The almost level footpaths that run alongside
them now offer delightful hiking opportunities,
taking walkers on a journey through time
– from the 15th century until today.
The soul of Nendaz also fi nds expression in
the old villages, and in the buildings shaped
by local culture: barns, grain stores, traditional
houses, mills and chapels.
