In the beautiful, authentic Val d'Hérens, steeped in tradition, the carnival of Evolène begins as early as 6 January. This is when peculiar creatures from long ago will take hold of the lovely village until Mardi Gras, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

First, you have the so-called “peluches”. They wear animal skins and cow bells and masks carved and hand-painted from native wood (Swiss pine). The spooky, wild creatures, which are still kind and always up to mischief, appear all of a sudden and chase away the bad spirits that bring cold weather, sickness and avalanches.

On the last Sunday before Mardi Gras, the empaillés - giant men of straw - will join the festivities and strike fear into the hearts of the people of Evolène with their brooms.

Finally, on Mardi Gras, the snowman, the “poutratze”, will be sacrificed. The carnival officially ends at midnight when the masks come off.
