The monastery evolved in the course of its existence into a religious, spiritual and economic center in the border region of the Cantons of Bern, Solothurn, Aargau and Lucerne.

Since the medieval monastery buildings were no longer meeting the monks' requirements inspite of reconstructions and expansions, they commissioned the Voralberg architect Franz Beer to design and build a completely new monastery complex. It is today the most impressive example of Baroque and Cistercian architecture and culture in Switzerland.

Tours are possible throughout the year, for a fee, upon timely appointment (except Sundays and holidays). Every first Sunday in the month from May to October individuals or small groups up to 10 persons can participate after the mass in an art-historic tour (free of charge).
