As a “Thank you” for the hospitality in the Swiss mountains, the "Association of British Members of the Swiss Alpine Club" builds the Britannia Hut between the Chessjen and Hohlaub glaciers. The members collect among themselves the money for the construction and inauguration of the hut, totaling the fantastic amount of 21,000 Swiss Franks.
The British donors have but one small request: On the second floor, next to the cozy salon, a wash room with water supply has to be built, a convenience, “which is highly appreciated by Alpinists who like to like to wash themselves”, teases a Geneva chronicler. Washed or unwashed: the 34-bunk monument to British-Swiss friendship is so successful that the hut is increased in the years 1929, 1951 and 1996 to the present size of 134 sleeping places.
