Intro

The Grisons Museum of Fine Arts regards itself as an internationally renowned centre for art, both in and from Graubünden. Following its expansion (2014-2016) and addition of the prominent annex built by architect Barozzi Veiga, the museum has become one of the public’s favourite museums in Switzerland.

The unique collection covers around 8,000 pieces from all genres of fine art from the 18th century to the present day and is showcased across an area of 1,200 m2. The highlights include groups of works by Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807), who was born in Chur and became one of the first eminent female artists at the Royal Academy in London. The showpiece of the collection is the Giacometti family of artists, including world-renowned sculptor Alberto and the two eminent Swiss painters Giovanni and Augusto. The collection features key works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) and the Swiss expressionists. More recent and contemporary trends are represented by Matias Spescha (1925-2008), Not Vital (1948-) and Hans Danuser (1953-), for example. Five or six thematic or monographic temporary exhibitions of historical and contemporary art are held every year alongside the permanent collection.

The museum also has a stylish café, which is located in the beautiful conservatory of the Villa Planta. In summer, visitors can sit out in the open air in the pedestrianised area in the shade of ancient redwood trees. The café serves fresh regional dishes. In the foyer you can find a well-stocked art bookshop, selling a wide range of items ranging from exhibition catalogues and art postcards to the best-known works from the museum’s own collection.
