Aarau historic city centre

The first city wall dates back to the 13th century. In the 14th century the town was expanded while under Habsburg rule. Today the historic city centre presents itself as a well-preserved town centre with mostly late Gothic houses. The more than 70 richly painted eaves that adorn the historic city centre are a special feature. It is to these that Aarau owes its nickname "town of beautiful gables".
