Valais

The serene, sunny high valley in the Goms region, in Upper Valais, is famous for its authentic villages with wooden houses and whitewashed churches. Goms is an attractive cross-country paradise in winter and a popular and far-flung hiking region in summer.

Mighty three-thousand-meter peaks surround Goms, the uppermost valley along the Rhone River. The valley extends over fifty kilometers from Brig to Gletsch, the village at the foot of the Rhone Glacier. The quiet villages of the Goms region harbor cultural treasures. About 70 baroque churches and chapels with slender white spires, and also old, sun-blackened wooden houses and barns in the Valaisian style, appeal to the hearts of culture-minded guests. Nature lovers will not want to miss an excursion to the adjacent UNESCO-World Natural Heritage Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn, with the imposing mighty Aletsch Glacier.

You can also discover the region by train, since the Goms is located on the famous Glacier Express line that links Zermatt with St. Moritz or Davos. A ride on the nostalgic steam train of the Furka Line also guarantees an unforgettable experience. The Furka railway tunnel with car transfer enables direct access to Goms from Zürich/Central Switzerland all year round. In summer, when the Alpine passes Furka, Nufenen and Grimsel are open, the journey to the Goms region is even more varied. Cozy little hotels and a plethora of holiday apartments welcome visitors with traditional Valaisian hospitality.

Summer

In summer, nature enthusiasts will be able to hike to their hearts’ content on over 700 kilometers of marked trails, ranging from mountain, glacier and pass routes to leisurely walks in the valley. On a myriad of nature trails with special themes - among them the “Journey through the Life of Caesar Ritz”, dedicated to the luxury hotel pioneer born in Goms - one can learn much about the culture of the high valley. A Nature Trail for bicyclists as well as several Mountainbike Trails invites families to explore the region on the saddle of a steel-horse. River rafting on the young Rhone River, or a mule or llama trekking tour on narrow mule trails, appeal to the more adventurous.

Just visited this area for the Watch My Wallet website in the UK. Fantastic region, amazing to see the Aletsch and Rhone glaciers. Great cycle riding in the Goms valley and excellent food too. ;-)
