Other regions may be bigger, but only a few offer as much variety and contrast as Glarus. Surrounded by the impressive mountainworld you will discover attractive contrasts: Traditional industrial culture on one hand, and the august mountainworld with the Tectonic Arena Sardona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the other.

There are famous names galore: Who does not know the mineral water Elmer Citro, the flavorful Schabziger Cheese, or the ski legend Vreni Schneider? Nevertheless everything is informal and down to earth. Even after just one day, the visitor returns relaxed to daily life.

Summer

If visitors want to spend their leisure time being active in the great outdoors, Glarus is exactly right. Especially in summer. Some walk along one of the many themed trails, others ride mountain bikes, hike or swim, climb or fly with the glider. In the unlikely event that the sun does not shine, there are many interesting museums and factories that can be visited.

Highlights

  • The Tschingelhörner mountains with the Martinsloch (triangular hole in the mountain) – a nature spectacle and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Tectonic Arena Sardona. In good weather, the sun shines twice a year (March 12/13 and October 1/2) through the Martinsloch - exactly onto the church tower in Elm.
  • The Glarus Thrust Fault – Switzerland’s most famous geological outcrop shows how mountains were formed by tectonic overthrust.
  • Industrial culture with a rich tradition – Glarus is one Switzerland’s most industrialized region. Many industries (Chocolate, Schabziger, Electricity or Paper) are accessible to the public.
  • Freuler Palace – the most famous building in the Canton of Glarus (built in the year 1648). In the house and castle complex you will find Switzerland’s most important artwork of the 17th century.
  • Klöntal Lake – man-made reservoir lake in the mountains, fjord-like and famous for its fantastic reflections. In the summer it is ideal for water sports and fishing, in the winter for ice diving and iceskating.
  • Zigerstöckli - Popular Glarus Cream Cheese. The Glarus Schabziger is considered to be Switzerland’s oldest branded product.
  • Via Ferrata – the fixed rope routes from Braunwald via four peaks are among the most attractive ones in the Eastern Alps.
  • Elm – The core of the picture-perfect village with its impressive timber-framed houses is protected heritage and was awarded the Wakker prize.

Top Events

  • Rural municipality – on the first Sunday in May, villagers meet at the Zaunplatz in Glarus and decide the fate of the canton by raising their hands. (May).
  • Braunwald Music Weeks – young artists have been introduced under different themes since 1935. Focal point is classical music, but also modern compositions are presented (July).
  • International Klausen Race Memorial - Revival of the earlier Klausen Race with historic vehicles (takes place every few years in September, the next will be in September of 2013).
  • Glarus Alpine Cheese and Schabziger Market as well as Alpine Descent of the Cattle in Elm – dairymen present their cheese at cheese tastings. Zigerstöckli cheese production, festively decorated inn with Alpine menus and folklore music and entertainment (October)
