Even in prehistoric times people wandered through the Lötsch Valley and across the pass of the same name - as attested to by finds from the Bronze Age and the Ice Age. Up until the Middle Ages the Lötsch Pass was an important connection between the Bernese Oberland and Valais.
Even today the Lötsch Valley is the starting point for innumerable mountain tours in a pristine landscape. Two hundred kilometers of hiking trails lead through the valley, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Region Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. Old customs such as the well-known shrovetide tradition "Tschäggätä" have been preserved here. The Lötsch Valley skiing region is located at the Lauchern Alp above Wiler, where a mountain train takes visitors high up to the glacier skiing region.

With its unique mountain-valley views and the most beautiful close-of-valley in the Alps, the Lötschental is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Valais. With 200 km of marked hiking trails the Lötschental becomes a paradise for hikers of any fitness level. The refreshing and energizing mountain air in the Lötschental let hiking become an experience of body and mind. Hint: The walk from the Lauchernalp across the Lötschenpass into the Bernese Oberland to Kandersteg ranks among the classics of the region. Fafleralp, situated right at the rear of the Lötschental is the starting point of the Lötschental ‘high route’ across south-facing Alpine pastureland through to the Lauchernalp.

- Attention all families! This summer, families can explore legends and fairy tales on the Lötschentaler legend trail. A quiz (available at the tourist office in Wiler) with tricky questions about the legends trail, make the easy hike a fun experience for young and old.
- Hockenhorn – one of the highest mountain summits in Switzerland able to be traversed by hikers (3293 m).
- Lötschenpass – extremely popular walk across the Lötschenpass into the Gasterntal and on to Kandersteg (Bernese Oberland).
- Jungfrau-Aletsch region – listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001.
- Ferden, Kippel, Wiler and Blatten – Lötschental villages with practically untouched, historic village centres.

- «Tschäggätä» – a wild Lötschental carnival tradition (start of February to Ash Wednesday).
- Corpus Christi procession – a religious procession with the colourful «Herrgottsgrenadieren» (Grenadiers of Our Lord) (end of May/start of June).
