In 1926 a definite building site is decided on. The long discussions about the child’s name finally come to an end. The night station is to be called Turtmannhütte, in French Cabane de Tourtemagne. In 1928 the 30-bunk hut is built in two-and-a-half months and inaugurated on September 8th and 9th. Because the Turtmann Hut has become so popular over the years, it is modernized in 1977 and enlarged by 50 bunks.

The hut is so successful because from here Alpine hikers can ascend the Barrhorn, which is a proud 3,610 meters high. For this reason in 1993 a new expansion is warranted. The annex is built between 2000 and 2001 and the hut, now comprising 74 bunks, is inaugurated. The keynote speaker joyfully takes stock: “The first generation was inspired by sacred fire to build a hut. The second has expanded the hut by the time of the 50th anniversary. The third generation increased the size again to mark the conclusion of the first hundred years. And the future generations promise to do everything to preserve the hut’s good health even in the third millennium.”
