Description
Strategically this was an excellent location. Strangers came from Alsace and built a castle in around 1020 on the Wülpelsberg near the confluence of the Aare, Reuss and Limmat. They called it "Havichsberch", and immediately started calling themselves after it - the Habsburgers.
Together with the castles Wildegg and Brunegg, this threesome defied the Kyburg dynasty in Lenzburg. When the Habsburgs moved their power towards the east, their castles did indeed pass into foreign hands, yet they did not perish.
There is no question that the Aargauer Trail would lead past them in the form of a four-day tour from Frick to Bremgarten. On the second stage of the SchweizMobil Route 42 from Aarau to Brugg, two of these castles are worth a detour - Wildegg and Habsburg. The walk begins in the historic city centre of Aarau and leads from there to the river Aare, which it then follows for a considerable distance. Amongst other things, it runs along the newly created branch of the renaturalised Aare River near Rupperswil.
The trail ends at Schinznach-Bad thermal baths and water park, making the easy four-hour hike a must for the family programme.
