Description
Just minutes from the Bettmerhorn mountain station, the Gletscherblick lookout point awaits you for an unsurpassable view in which 32 fourthousanders form a majestic backdrop. With only the Bernese Alps to hold it back, the Aletsch Glacier spreads itself out in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Although Europe's largest ice stream has retreated slightly, it is still an impressive sight.
Over stone steps and along mountain trails the route leads down towards Rote Chumma. On hot summer days the fresh glacier breeze is especially pleasant. Carved into the rock, the wide mountain trail finally winds its adventurous way to Lake Märjelen. In previous times a mighty wall of ice from the Aletsch Glacier impounded the lake and icebergs the size of a house floated on the water. Today the polar landscape has yielded to an idyllic postcard setting, showing its best side in spring with its picturesque cotton grass meadows.
There is no reason whatsoever to resist the apple tart that is served straight from the wood fired oven in the Restaurant Gletscherstube. Unless perhaps those watching their waistlines choose to give the trail around the Talligrat with its fabulous views of the Fiescher Glacier a miss in order to take the shortcut and save an hour. Through a tunnel one reaches the other side of Talligrat, where a wide hiking trail leads down to Fiescheralp.
It would be a pity to immediately take the cable car for the descent into the valley…how about a night on the Aletsch plateau? Or opt for a panoramic excursion to the Eggishorn. The circular tour can be extended by including a hike to the Bettmeralp and Riederalp, where the next day an excursion to the Nature Center at the historic Villa Cassel or the scenic Aletsch Forest beckons.
