Since 1958 its primary purpose has been as the balancing reservoir for the Erlenbach power station. The protected upland moor on the eastern side of the lake provides a habitat for many plants and animals. There is a footpath round the Aegelsee, starting from the Diemtig-Bergli restaurant.
