This rocky ridge of mountains rises suddenly out of the pre-Alpine hills of the Emmental and the Napf. The north-west face is very steep, with bands of rock alternating with alpine meadows. To the south-east, the ridge slopes away more gently, but this is where the mostly barren karren fields of "Schrattenkalk" limestone stretch out, a good place to look for fossils. There are caves in this karst landscape.
