In August 2003, 300 hectares of woodland above Leuk were ablaze in one of Switzerland's biggest ever recorded forest fires. The fire spread from an altitude of 800 m right up to the tree-line at 2100 m, including parts of the forest that protected the town of Leuk and the road to Leukerbad. Now, footpaths take you right through this fascinating area, where you can see natural tree sculptures alongside the new growth of young trees, grasses and bushes.
