There are washing houses, mills, bird-catching cages, and drying houses for chestnuts.
Rather than risk having these things disappear forever, the area was declared as the Ecomuseo Valle di Muggio. The mill in Bruzella, built in the 16th century now works as it did on its first day, hiking trails bring visitors past coaling places, across bold stone bridges, and through chestnut forests. These trails give visitors a good idea what living in this region must have been like many centuries ago. At the same time, the Ecomuseum Valle di Muggio has allowed the inhabitants of the valley to find employment here, rather than in a far-off place.
Pension "Ul Furmighin" in Sagno
When the public taverns and the grocery store in Sagno were closed in 1994, a group of local inhabitants, supported by the community, sprung into action and created something new. The unused, large parsonage was converted to a hostel with individual and shared rooms, a restaurant and a shop.
The name Ul Furmighin means "the ant" in the local dialect, and refers to the former meeting place, the village square, where the gathering of people were perceived like an ant. Ul Furmighin wants to liven up and reinvigorate the village and the valley. The cuisine is excellent, and is based on local produce and regional recipes, which are pretty much Italian in this district.
