You can go by cable-car up from Lungern (750 m) to Turren and then on by chair-lift to Schönbüel (2002 m) where there are excellent views. The Lungern-Schönbüel area, with its fantastic views, is the starting point for many mountain walks and bike tours. The most well-known is the walk from the top station of the cable-car on Schönbüel to the Brienzer Rothorn (or vice versa). Every Sunday there is a brunch and a yodelling service on Schönbüel to strengthen body and soul for the climb.

Nature-loving walkers will enjoy the Butterfly Path – a 16 km long network of paths with two main routes across flower-filled pastureland. If you are lucky, during the flying season (June to September), you may see over 100 varieties of butterfly in this conservation area for native species.

The nature path, with 40 information signs along a beautiful 2.5 km long woodland walk, tells you interesting facts about the interplay between animals and plants and about the long-gone Ice Age. Popular with families is the walk, only 30 minutes from the station in Lungern, to the Chäppeli mountain restaurant with its children’s playground and pet’s corner.

The lake at Lungern, where the water is of drinking quality and up to 23 degrees, is perfect for bathing, and also has a small swimming pool area with a fine sandy beach and a long water slide. The mountain lake, formed by a dam, is popular with pedalo riders, fishermen and, thanks to reliable winds, with yachtsmen (there is a sailing school) and windsurfers. One of the nicest paths for walking or cycling is the gentle circular route around the lake. Bikes can be hired from the station in Lungern.

The family-friendly slopes of the panoramic Lungern-Schönbüel area go up to 2011 m. If you fancy trying out some unusual types of fun in the snow, you can buy a Snow Fun Card, which includes hire of 20 different pieces of trendy fun equipment, for example for snow tubing, skwalling or ski foxing. Sledgers can have fun on the 4 km long sledging run from Schönbüel to the middle station. There are well-prepared footpaths for winter walkers and snow-shoe walkers.

• Brünig-Schwinget – traditional "Hosenlupf" Swiss wrestling competition (since 1904), held in a sawmill, for the coveted Brünig wreath (end of July).
• Älplerchilbi – the end of summer in the Alps is celebrated with a big Älplerchilbi (alpine farmer’s fair) (October).

• Schönbüel – viewing point 2002 m high, impressive 360º views as far as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, starting point for the popular walk to the Brienzer Rothorn.
• Butterfly Path – circular walk (2.5 hrs) or valley walk (3 to 4 hrs) through flower-filled pastures with a unique range of butterflies.
• Walk from Schönbüel to the Brienzer Rothorn (about 2.5 hrs) – then by steam train and the Brünigbahn line back to Lake Lungern; a classic walk with lovely views of the Alps and Lake Brienz.
• Indoor shooting centre at Brünig – underground shooting range built into the cliff and covering over 10,000 m2. As well as the classic shooting disciplines, there is also shooting here with bow and arrow, darts or blowpipe.
• Brünigbahn – the narrow-gauge railway line leads from Interlaken via Brienz and the Brünig Pass (1002 m) on to Lucerne and Engelberg, a voyage of adventure that not only railway enthusiasts will love.
• "Sbrinz Route" – long-distance footpath named after the Central Swiss hard cheese, following the old trading route from Alpnachstad via the Brünig, Grimsel and Gries passes into the Val Formazza in Italy, as far as Domodossola. Salt and hard cheeses were important trading goods until the second half of the 19th century.
