Gruyère is a very mountainous region, criss-crossed by deep and narrow valleys sheltering traditional wood-built hamlets. To enter the region, one has to pass thorough the only existing portico, over which the fine town of Bulle stands guard as over the entrance to a castle.

Gruyère is a paradise for hikers and mountain-bikers and is also the base camp for many interesting excursions - to a modern demonstration dairy and high-pasture dairy, a chocolate factory, the medieval city of Gruyère itself and its castle or the cable cars from Charmey and Moléson.
