In the south western corner of the Valais, close to France and Italy, lies the comparatively young holiday resort of Verbier. From its sunny plateau at 1500 m, it offers breath-taking views of the Combin Massif and Mont Blanc. In winter, this region becomes one of the biggest skiing areas in Switzerland.
4km slopes open during the weekends
The holiday resort of Verbier and the Val de Bagnes form a sunny and beautiful 399-square-kilometre sport and relaxation region. Verbier is built in typical Swiss chalet style, with more than one thousand chalets and holiday apartments to choose from. The centre of the town pulsates with life and there are plenty of shops, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and discos.
Summer
There are 400 km of hiking trails, and experienced hikers can follow the tracks of the chamois through this mountain world, which is covered in snow even in summer. For those looking for more action there is climbing, paragliding down to the valley and 200 km of mountain bike piste. A trip aboard the mountain railway to the peak of Mont Fort with its impressive panorama from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc is a must. Golfers will find two exciting courses and the modern sports centre offers saunas, tennis, squash and curling whatever the weather.
Winter
As soon as the first snow falls, Verbier becomes a winter sports paradise. 'Les 4 Vallées’ (Four Valleys) is the name of the immense ski resort with a good 410 km of piste and more than 90 lifts and railways linking the stations of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon and La Tzoumaz. A cableway opens up the top of Mont Fort at a height of 3330 metres. From here there is a fantastic view to the Matterhorn, Grand Combin and Mont Blanc.
The Esserts Fun Park has facilities for various trendy sports such as snowtubing, snowcross and snowcarting. You can also enjoy the winter landscape without skis along the snowshoe and winter hiking trails or on two 10-km- long toboggan pistes. For those who love major ski tours, Verbier is well known as a starting point and staging post in the so-called ‘Haute Route’ to Zermatt and Saas Fee.
