With 4000 animals, Basel's Zoo has the greatest number of zoo-animals in Switzerland. Spectacular first-time breedings of rare and endangered animals occur on a regular basis in this scientifically maintained zoo. The Vivarium boasts one of the most impressive selections of fish, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrate animals.

In the Children's Zoo, children are able to pet animals and help take care of them. It is located very close to the SBB railway station. Basel's Zoo was founded in 1874 and is one of Europe's most tradition-rich zoos. Initially it was only intended as an animal park for native animals. The first exotic animals were added between 1880 and 1900: camels, llamas and tapirs as well as an elephant and an orangutan.
