Monte Brè - high above Lugano

Lugano

Monte Brè towers above the city of Lugano and is considered to be the sunniest mountain in Switzerland. This might be the reason why the rare Christmas Rose (an endangered species) grows here, which can otherwise only flourish in Southern Europe. The funicular takes visitors up the mountain from Cassarate.

Monte Brè is well-known for its breathtaking panorama of the Alps, the city of Lugano, Monte Rosa and the Italian region between Milan and Turin. Since 1912, the funicular Lugano-Casserate has been taking visitors comfortably to the mountaintop, via the mid-station of Suviglia.

There are hiking trails and educational trails starting at the peak (1,000 meters above sea level), including mountain paths to neighbouring peaks and a challenging descent to Lake Lugano via the educational trail "Nature and Archaeology". An easy to descend staircase takes you to the village of Brè, a typical Ticinese village replete with grottoes. The Art Path, situated in the center of the village, showcases the works of established artists.
