Blatten

The Massa Hiking Trail gives hikers a good illustration of how the alpine irrigation system (bisses) worked in the olden days. The trail follows the Riedere canal and connects the villages Blatten and Ried-Mörel. Thanks to an engineering feat, the trail high above the Massa Gorge is carved right into the cliffside.

The Massa Hiking Trail starts in Blatten. The Furka-Oberalp-Bahn (FO) goes from Brig to Blatten regularly. Leave Blatten and hike towards the valley until you cross the brook that carries the same name. On the other side of the valley, the trail now snakes along the Riedere canal to Ried. Then ascend to the Riederalp via aerial cable-car. A flat, wide trail begins at the mountain station and leads to Bettmeralp.

Starting point: Bus station Blatten-Belalp.
Destination: Bettmeralp.
Get to Blatten-Belalp by aerial cable-car, train and bus .
Walking time: 3 h 45 min
Season: June through October
