Lake Toma is regarded as the source of the Rhine, and this is the only place where the river that traverses four countries can be crossed with one step. The hike starts on the Oberalp Pass and crosses the valley southwards (with almost no variation in height); then it climbs 350m to the enchanted mountain lake.

Description

Lake Toma, the cradle of the mighty Rhine, lies at an elevation of 2,344 meters, in the middle of a nature reserve. From the Oberalp Pass a 90-minute hike on marked paths leads to the lake, which lies beneath the Piz Badus. Cuckoo flowers, gentian, alpine roses, marguerites and white cotton grass grow on the edges of the path and the lake. The lake is listed as one of Switzerland's landscapes and natural monuments of national importance and its water has the quality of drinking water.

It is well worth walking right to the end of the lake to enjoy the reflections. We choose the little gorge at the "beginning" of the Rhine for the descent.

From the valley bottom, the route climbs another 140 meters to the SAC Mayghels hut with accommodation and award-winning homemade cakes.
