Intro

With a length of 375 kilometers, the Rhine is the longest river in Switzerland. Although the Rhine flows far to the east of the country, thanks to mighty tributaries it drains 80 per cent of Switzerland’s surface. Now it’s time to leave the water for a short while, because at Neuhausen the mightily grown river plunges at the Rhine Falls into the depth. In the summer about 700 cubic meters of water gush downwards per second, the record quantity, however, is twice as high. The fearless climb under the Rhine Falls into one of the boats that travel very close to the roaring waters.

Description

Several source streams in Graubünden form the two headwaters - the Upper and Lower Rhine, while Lake Toma at the Oberalp Pass is usually called the source of the Rhine. The Rhine Gorge near Illanz with its towering rock walls on either side of the river is an early high point along the river.

After Chur, Graubünden’s capital city, the Rhine turns northward towards Lake Constance. In addition to the White Fleet on Lake Constance, a boatride (or canoe ride) on Lake Untersee and the Rhine up to Schaffhausen is an extraordinary water adventure.

Up to its farewell to Switzerland, the Rhine mostly forms the border with Germany. Near Koblenz, at the confluence of the Aare and the Rhine, the water mass is more than doubled. The proud Rhine is well prepared for its last appearance in Basel.
