Riding the big Säntis cable car from Schwägalp over the ridges to the mountain station is an impressive experience in itself. Visitors gather on the viewing platform beneath the tower and try to identify the nearby and distant mountains. The meteorologists had good reason to establish a weather station on this mountain back in 1882.

Mountaineers have been entertained on the Säntis since 1846, initially in a simple refuge. The railway line to Wasserauen at the start of the last century was actually the start of a planned railway to the Säntis. As the line never reached beyond the village, however, the Säntis cableway from Schwägalp was opened in 1935.

Sure-footed mountain hikers love the Lisegrat, a route secured by steel cables leading to the Rotstein pass. Another equally picturesque path leads to the Schäfler mountain restaurant and continues to the Ebenalp. Even on the steep western side of the mountain there are Alpine paths for those with a head for heights, including one to the Tierwis mountain restaurant – also accessible from the 2nd pillar of the Säntis cable car.
