Description
But what eventuates is far different from what might be imagined. Granted the climb to Gemmi is steep and long, however the trail is well constructed and never truly dangerous. In any case, preparatory climbing exercises will not be required. Once at the top, your vista will extend across the Daubensee. Turn around and the Valais Alps face you. The landscape on the Gemmi is bleak and rugged. Scree surrounds the lake. In contrast, colourful, flower-spangled meadows border the walking trail a little further down next to the Spittelmatte plateau.
Leukerbad - Gemmi pass - Daubensee - Schwarenbach - Spittelmatte - Sunnbüel
The railway station in Kandersteg is the ideal starting point for the Gemmi pass walk. Allow the train to take you to Goppenstein first of all. From there, buses will ferry you directly to Leukerbad. The walking signposts showing the direction of the Gemmi pass will from now on mark your way. The climb to the pass is steep and long. A well-constructed upland track then passes alongside the Daubensee down to the Hotel Schwarenbach. Making its way past magnificent alpine meadows, the trail then takes you down to the Spittelmatte plateau. A small climb finally leads to the Sunnbüel upper cableway station. Kandersteg railway station is again reached via the cableway and then by the bus.
