"Sentier des Monts": Mont Soleil – Mont Crosin

The photovoltaic solar power station operates on Mount Soleil. Wind turbines stand on Mount Crosin. This route links the Mt-Soleil solar power plant with the Mt-Crosin wind turbine plant.

On Mont Soleil, where this high-altitude hike begins, there are a number of wind turbines as well as Switzerland's largest solar power plant. 4,500 square metres of silicon solar cells on 20,000 square metres of land (approximately three football fields) transform sunlight directly into electric current; they produce about 600,000 kWh of electricity annually which can be used to provide electricity to 200 households.

This facility also plays its part in photovoltaic research and development, and demonstrates the potential for utilising solar energy.

The hiking path starts with a climb from the Mt-Soleil mountain station of the funicular railway for a good 100m to the highest point of the tour, after which there are virtually no more uphill gradients before Mont Crosin. Wind turbines loom on the horizon or from behind knolls.
