The facade of the Haus zum Ritter features one of the most important Renaissance frescoes north of the Alps. The original frescoes by Tobias Stimmer were taken off the facade in 1935, preserved and displayed in the Museum zu Allerheiligen. The mural depicts and praises the civil virtues.

Munot Fortress is the landmark towering above the city. It was built in the 16th century by the citizens, perhaps inspired by and based on an idea of Albrecht Dürer. The Salginatobel bridge is a significant monument to construction, designed by the well-known Swiss civil engineer Robert Maillart (1872 - 1940) and built in 1929/30.

The fortress encloses a church and a number of other buildings within its walls, where Roman and Gothic styles stand side by side. The Gothic church has a rood screen dating back to the 13th century and holds a 14th century organ, a n extremely rare piece that is the oldest working organ in the whole world. Collegiate Library St.Gallen
The Abbey Library in St.Gallen is one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. The library as it looks today was built between 1758 and 1767 under the guidance of Peter Thumb, the master builder from the Bregenz Forest. The unique treasure of medieval manuscripts is displayed in yearly changing exhibitions. Along with the whole abbey district, the library was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Karlstor
Of the original eleven gates belonging to the city walls, only the "Abbot's Gate" or Karlstor (Karl's Gate) is still standing. It was built in 1570 and named after Cardinal Charles Borromeo of Milan. He is supposedly the first person to have walked through the gate.

Oriels in St.Gallen
St.Gallen is also known as a city of oriels. A total of 111 oriels have been preserved in this city. St.Gallen experienced an oriel construction boom between 1650 and 1720. In those years many of the oriels still existing today were built. Some of some have such interesting names as Camel Oriel, Pelican Oriel, Swan Oriel.

The former convent of St. Katharinen was founded in 1228 and abolished 300 years later during the Reformation. Particularly noteworthy are the Gothic Cloister. In summer concerts take place in the courtyard.

Besides the Cathedral, this is the city's most important church. The present building dates back to the 15th century, but it was entirely reconstructed from 1850 to 1854 and now is a basilica in neo-Gothic style. Upon request - climb the tower and enjoy a wonderful view over the roofs of St Gallen.

From the Middle Ages up to the 19th century, this building served merchants as a warehouse and for weighing goods. Since its restaurant in 1963 the Assembly room of the community council takes place on the upper floor.
