Abegg Foundation

The Abegg Foundation, established in 1961, is a cultural institution that houses one of the most valuable collections of textiles in the world. Its museum, not far from Bern, displays fabrics and hand-crafted textiles from Europe, the Mediterranean region and the Near East, dating from antiquity up to the 18th century.

Highlights of the collection initiated by Werner and Margaret Abegg are textiles, unrivalled in quality and significance, from the European Middle Ages and from the region of the Silk Route. Exhibited alongside and enriching this textile world are numerous works of applied art dating from antiquity to 1800. The former home of the founders, the Villa Abegg, with its charming mirrored gallery, is also open to the public.

Due to construction, the museum will remain closed until spring 2011.
