The renowned Churfirsten peaks rise between the Toggenburg and the Walensee lake – together with the surrounding area, they make up a unique recreational area in Eastern Switzerland which is included in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes, Sites, and Natural Monuments of National Importance (BLN). One highlight is the Chäserrugg peak, which rewards hikers with a superb view of the Walensee 1,800 metres below. Those of a less athletic bent will enjoy a stay in the small town of Werdenberg, where they can explore the mediaeval castle and a museum that offers a first-hand introduction to the region's culture and history.
